Inside Library

The library, run by the Chevalier Resource Centre, is actually housed in the adjacent Sacred Heart Monastery. The Library contains up to 100,000 books, mainly theological and philosophical books in relation to the Catholic religion. These books date from 1800 to the present day, and contain a rich collection of older theological books. Some second hand books may be purchased.

Inside Archives

The library is generally open Monday to Friday: 9.30 am to 12.00 noon. However, alternate times may be arranged by contacting the librarian, Fr Tony Caruana, on

The Archives of the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

The Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart moved to Australia in 1885. Since then quite a large collection of correspondence, and other records have been preserved in the Sacred Heart Monastery. People wishing to do research on the Catholic Church in Australia, may find valuable information here with regards to the Australian Province of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Approval is normally required from the Provincial of the Society before access to these archives is permitted. Monastery on the Hill, by Anthony Caruana, is a history of the Sacred Heart Monastery, and the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Australia is available from the Chevalier Resource Centre. Current price for the illustrated, 396 page hardback version is $50.00.
